Michael Jackson dies at 50

“Entertainer Michael Jackson has died after being taken to a hospital on Thursday after suffering cardiac arrest, according to multiple reports including the Los Angeles Times and the Associated Press.”

A sad ending to a tumultuous life, spiraling into perhaps the deepest abyss since Elvis. GD pays homage to Michael Jackson, a truly iconic and mysterious figure. May death bring you the peace you could not find in life etc etc.

TRAX Records Chicago

Think of a classic house record and nine times out of ten you’ll think of Trax, although you may not realise it. ‘Move Your Body’? ‘Baby Wants To Ride’? ‘Washing Machine’? ‘Can U Feel It’? All Trax releases. ‘House Nation’? ‘Acid Trax’? ‘Your Love’? ‘We Are Phuture’? ‘U Used To Hold Me’? Yup, those too. What’s more they introduced the world to producers who’ve become immortalised as some of house music’s greatest innovators - Larry Heard, Marshall Jefferson, Larry Levan - and have provided an outlet for many more of Chicago’s house artists over the years, such as Armando, Liddell Townsend, Robert Owens, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Mr Lee, Adonis, Fast Eddie, Ralphie Rosario, DJ Rush, Steve Poindexter, Terry Baldwin, DJ Skull… the list goes on. And they did it all by releasing crappy-looking records that sounded like they’d been pressed on sandpaper. Now there’s a story worth telling

Site madness

We have a weird problem with the Smack Dynamik domain and since it’s sunday/bank holiday, so no way to contact the provider. We’ll see what’s going on tuesday and try to fix it. Who knows, it might fix itself (yeah right). Meantime the forum is down and any page hosted on smack-dynamik.com as well. over here at GD HQ everything works fine except for the navigation that’s kinda messed up since it’s interwoven with SD. Aaaaaanyway, a good time to start leaving some comments here then I”d say.

Suckkkk - The Managment

**Update: Well ‘erthing works again, server had the hick-ups when two people tried to post on the forum simultaneously. Most unusual.

Who’s TLR, anyway?

Interview by Lina Goldberg, photo by Paul Langlade

TLR’s mountain-man beard and baggy hoodies hint at his past life as a squatter, but they don’t give away quite how ambitious this Dutch DJ-cum-record-promoter-cum-radio-personality really is.

TLR, known to his schoolteachers as Jeroen van der Star, now 38, went from organizing grimy squat parties in the ’90s called Global Darkness, to creating a web portal and community for the Dutch West Coast electro scene under the same name. He also runs Holland’s notorious Crème Organization record label which has over fifty Chicago, acid, disco and soundtrack-esque releases on the main label, plus additional releases on Crème Jak, a sub-label for the jackin’ Chicago sound and another sub-label, Crème Eclipse, for more experimental & electro releases. And although you may hear TLR lashing “Skydiver” into his sets, he has his fingers in many musical pies, from punk to cosmic to Chicago house to disco.

TLR’s also been doing a radio show, Back to Music, on Intergalactic FM. Back to Music features about as much wit as Dutch radio can stand, horror movie soundtracks, synthesizer music, Italo disco and a lot of tracks that even TLR doesn’t seem to know the names to. The musically eclectic show is infused with van der Star’s unique brand of black humor, which is also stamped across all of his projects, from the Crème Organization releases to his The Hague record shop, Cobra Nero, whose motto is “where the only good customer is a dead one.”

Over on Infinite State Machine I badgered TLR for an exclusive mix and then caught up with him via email to try and find out what the hell cosmic actually is. Check it out.
